Nobody doubts the capability of major blockchain teams. The challenge is not their willingness to upgrade, but the architectural reality:
1. Past transaction history is immutable:
Every historical transaction already revealed mathematical clues to private keys directly onto the public ledger. Changing future signature algorithms does not erase past records, leaving exposed addresses open to retroactive quantum computation.2. Legacy and dormant wallets:
A migration requires an active signature from the key holder. Millions of addresses belong to lost keys, dormant accounts, or fixed smart contracts that simply cannot sign a migration. Handling them without breaking consensus or causing hard forks is exceptionally difficult.
3. Native architecture vs. retrofitting:
Securing an entire blockchain requires updating user signatures, network consensus, and state validation simultaneously. Doing that on an active network without disruption is far more vulnerable than building a post-quantum L1 natively from the first block, which is the path taken with ATQM.
